What is Music at Heart?
Music at Heart (CIC) is a community of families in York whose goal is for their babies, toddlers and young children to develop a love for music, whilst building confidence and nurturing their minds.
We believe that all babies and toddlers can learn and that it is never too early to start. Our music classes are calm and supportive places where young children and their carers can feel respected for who they are and where they are at on their musical journey together.
Where are Music at Heart classes?
Music at Heart holds all classes in the Citadel (owned by York City Church) on Gillygate. By being in the heart of the city we are accessible for all Music at Heart families coming from any part of York or beyond. As a not-for-profit organisation, we are proud to be in the Fifth Quarter in York that supports local businesses and community organisations in the locality.
We have a designated music teaching studio within the building as well as being able to use other facilities when needed. Our studio and facilities are all accessible and there is space inside the building to leave pushchairs.
How is Music at Heart different to other baby and toddler music classes in York?
Music at Heart has always been a supportive, non-judgmental space where families can come as they are. Our classes are calm and gentle (new families are often surprised by how calm!), where babies and toddlers are patiently respected to learn at their own pace.
Teachers and parents/carers work together to model turn-taking and other character skills. It is absolutely fine to have a "listening turn" if a child does not feel ready. In fact, much is learnt through observation.
Unusually for baby and toddler music classes, our teachers are all qualified teachers, and highly experienced musicians. We also have a number of teaching partners who participate in our Early Childhood classes and support both the teacher and families. All teachers and teaching partners undergo regular observations and training with Heather, Music at Heart's Creative Director.
